Part One:  Xeon Architectural Advancements
The new Xeon 5500  series server and high-end workstation processors (codenamed Nehalem) have been a much anticipated leap forward in processor technology, marking the next major innovation in the now legendary Xeon processor family. They also mark a major shift in design with new features that greatly open up the processors potential across the server motherboard and subsystems (which are codenamed "Tylersburg" for all dual socket systems) while retaining all the best features from the last generation.

Key New System Technologies:

  • New 45nm Intel® Microarchitecture - smaller, more efficient transistor technology saves power and improves performance

  • New Intel® QuickPath interconnect - QuickPath Interconnect (QPI), allows direct CPU to CPU communication

  • Integrated Memory Controller (IMC) - A triple channel DDR3 memory controller built into the CPU core allows direct communication between processors and memory bypasses the front side bus and allows much higher memory bandwidth (up to 25.6 Gb/sec bandwidth per link)

  • Native DDR3 support - The native DDR3 supports the fastest possible memory technology on any server today (actual memory speed depends on DIMM ranking and channel population)

  • PCI Express Generation 2.0 - Supports the fastest possible expansion slots, including dual PCI express 2.0 x16 slots on workstation board
