3200 Quad Core Processor Preview |
Announced at CES (Consumer Electronics Show) Jan.
8, 2007 and hitting the streets next month is the Xeon 3200 series. Following
in the wake of the Xeon 3000 dual-core lineup, Xeon 3200 are quad-core
processors are based on the Kentsfield CPU (see newsletter article
Intel Quad Core Desktop Processors) and are optimized for
entry level enterprise servers. The Xeon 3200 series will provide excellent
performance margins with the four cores allowing computational
scaling for multi-threaded applications never before seen in a
single processor server system.Xeon 3200 not
only pack four execution cores into a nice one-way LGA 775 package
but features just about every other current Intel processor
technology including 65nm Core Microarchitecture, Virtualization
Technology (VT), enhanced Intel speed step (EIST), a 1066MHz front
side bus, and 8MB shared Level 2 cache. |

* Motherboard Compatibility |
| The Xeon 3200 Series will require compatible
socket LGA 775 motherboards or barebones. Unfortunately a large
number of the S3000AH (codenamed Aspen Hill) and S3000PT (codename
Port Townsend) series motherboards and the 1530AH series barebones
system already sold will not support the Xeon 32xx processor at all so
you must be careful to order the correct supporting hardware first.
In fact most customers with existing systems will probably not be
able to perform a quad-core upgrade. However going forward all Xeon
3000 platforms will be made compatible. Full details on compatible Intel
hardware is below. |
